Jeremy Trent

It is my privilege to introduce you to the Varsity Basketball coach here at Flint Powers Catholic High School. The 2013-14 season  will mark coach Trent’s 10th season as a varsity head coach and his 15th season being involved in high school basketball.  Coach Trent is no stranger to success at high school basketball. During Coach Trent’s time playing at Swartz Creek High School, he became one of the schools all-time greats and holds many records at Swartz Creek. In his playing career at Swartz Creek, Coach Trent won 1 Big Nine Conference title and 2 District Championships. After his high school days were over, Coach Trent played at college basketball at Mott Community College, and started on a team that won a league championship. That league championship happened to be the first of Coach Steve Schmidt’s career at MCC. Following his freshman year at Mott, Coach Trent played his sophmore season at Alma College. Coach Trent earned the distinction of an Honorable Mention All MIAA Selection as a sophmore at Alma.  His success as a player has followed him into his coaching career. Coach Trent’s first coaching experience came at his alma mater Swartz Creek High School as an assistant under Rory Mattar. Coach Trent spent 5 seasons with Coach Mattar, 2 years at SC and 3 years at Carman-Ainsworth. During their time at C/A, the Cavaliers went to back to back Class A state championship games. It is often said that teams will take on the personality of their coach.  During Coach Trent’s time on the sideline, his teams can be describes as relentless competitors, tough, physical, and intense teams. These attributes are not given by chance. Coach Trent works hard to instill these qualities into his teams. This is evident in what his 9 teams have been able to accomplish. Coach Trent began his head coaching career at Burton Bentley High School, taking over a team that had won 5 games over the previous two seasons. In his second season, Coach Trent guided the Bulldogs to the second best record in school history, 18 wins and 5 losses. I can personally say, as someone who played against Coach Trent’s teams at Bentley both in regular season games and scrimmages, those were some of the toughest and most competitive teams to play in the Genesee County area. In the five years at Bentley, Coach Trent guided the Bulldogs to 4 second place finishes in the GAC and 5 straight district championship game appearances.  Shortly after being hired by Swartz Creek, Coach Trent began helping his players improve their skills and fundamentals. This work put in paid immediate dividends for his players, as they won their first league championship in 20 years, in Coach Trent’s first season as Swartz Creek’s head coach. Coach Trent won an average of 15 games a season during his time at Swartz creek.

Off the floor, Coach Trent has been married to his wife, Becky, for 4 years. He is the father of two boys. His son Zach is a 7th grader at  St. Roberts in Flushing. He and his wife just had baby Cooper in December.   Coach Trent enjoys reading, anything competitive,  following his former players,  and spending  time with his family. –Tim Tenneriello
